The end of April and May are busy period for a wine lover’s calendar in Monferrato! Tiny grape clusters are forming in the vineyards, and barrels of aged wines from past harvests are being presented. It is a great time to go directly to the D.O.C. and the D.O.C.G. zones to join in the celebrations.


April 30th and May 1st: “Le Contrade del Freisa” Fair in Buttigliera d’Asti

A traditional village fair with food stalls, and local producers offering their native grape wine, the red and special Freisa. There are organized walking and mountain bike tours, vintage auto exhibit, theater pieces, a short wine tasting course offered by the local growers cooperative and a band concert and choral choir.

May 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th: “Di Cortile in Cortile” Barbera fair in Castagnole delle Lanze

A well organized, busy program of events always sure to include wine tastings, food specialties, street artists and conviviality.
The fair is held in the old village center where courtyards are open, each hosting a party. A map is furnished to lead you from one court’s offering to the next.

May 6th and 7th:  “Vinissage” Organic Wine Fair in Asti

The event kicks off on Saturday evening with a dinner of Vegan specialties and music for  20 Euro, reservations required. Sunday from 10:20am-7pm: Wine tastings: 10 Euro buys a glass for the free samples and a 5 Euro credit to spend on products from the food and wine stalls. Group discussions and conferences will be going on all afternoon.

May 12nd, 13th and 14th: “Festa del Ruchè” fair in Castagnole Monferrato

This small and very panoramic town is the center of the tiny Ruchè DOC zone. In Castagnole, they are justly proud of their rare and delicious native wine. The event is centered in the 18thC. porticoed structure of the Tenuta La Mercantile.
Friday 12th: in the evening starts the affair with a gala dinner (Reservations required, price at be set).
Saturday 13th: Wine tastings with Ruchè producers: A fee of 12euro buys 8 tickets redeemable for tastings . There will be food stalls, and music and, at midnight…a moonlit walk in the vineyards.
Sunday 14th, morning: guided morning walk through the Ruchè vineyards with wine tasting (Free/reservation requested) followed by an open market with stalls of local foods/products and informal lunch on offer.
Sunday 14th, afternoon: the market remains open until 6:30pm and there is an exhibition of falconry held in the town’s sport field, mid afternoon.
The Festa di Ruchè is coordinated by the Comune of Castagnole M. the local farmers association and the Go Wine Association. There is a shuttle bus available from parking area in the hamlet Fornace.

May 13th and 14th: Barbera Fair in Montegrosso d’ Asti

A small town event full of music, fun, food and a dozen local wine producers offering tastings and sales. Friday evening a candlelit wine event at the foot of the town’s castle (Piazza Castello) followed by an ‘a la carte’ menu of traditional plates accompanied by music. Saturday, most of the action is centered in the town center, Piazza Vittore Emanuele. There will be wine and food tastings and stalls, walking tour, children’s chorus, Alpine veterans chorus and, after 8pm, Rock band concerts.

May 13th: “Nizza é Barbera” fair in Nizza Monferrato

A real wine lover’s event, held in Nizza Monferrato on the 2nd weekend of May, this Fair is a well organized setting for showing off Nizza’s signature Barbera DOC wine: affectionately refered to as “La Signora in Rosso” (The Lady in Red). Over 50 local producers offer tastings and local products in the old town center’s Covered Market. Acquisition of a wineglass allows you to sip your way around the by the town administration, the Regional Enoteca of Nizza Monferrato, the local wine producers association and Slow Food presidio.
At the Regional Enoteca in the town center, there are guided tastings and semi and professional conferences. The Enoteca’s fine restaurant/vineria and local trattorias/ristorante will be offering typical food selections to pair with your Barbera of choice.
Saturday is a “Notte Bianca”, with shops, restaurants and cafes remaining open until midnight
Sunday throughout the old city’s streets and porticos there is an open market, a Street Food Fair and a Nizza Pizza party for 15e (reservation required: 329 2284049).

May, 27th and 28th: “Cantine Aperte” Open wine cellars & tastings

Cantine Aperte, or “Open Cellars” is an Italy-wide initiative to promote direct contact between our passionate and curious wine tourists and local wine producers. There are Open Days scheduled throughout the year, and each cellar offers their individual program for welcoming and entertaining guests.
Here in Monferrato, 27 cooperative and private cellars, from small family wine farms to elegant castle wine estates, and 2 famous grappa distilleries have adhered to the initiative.
Some offer simple tastings of their varieties in rustic cantinas, other have planned programs of music, vineyard walks, art installations, markets, tours of infernot and caves—even an exhibition of working horses.
Most of the cellars offer food—starting with snacks of local products to accompany the wines, to full lunch service. (Prices varying from free to 5 € – 20 € per person). The programs, pricing, travel details are all described on the organized website of Movimento Turismo del Vino.

May 28th: “Di Grignolino in Grignolino” tastings in Casale Monferrato

One of the “Cantine a Nordovest” Wine events offered by Slow Food Group of Monferrato Casalese and Moncalvo. To celebrate Monferrato’s Grignolino wines, 24 local cellars have joined, to offer a day of tastings all around the territory. A touristic itinerary will guide you around the rolling hills and through vineyards of this native grape. Typical plates and local products will be available, offered by the cellars to accompany their wines, and many local restaurants will be along the routes, for your gastronomic pleasure.
The event is ppen to Slow Food members. Inscription can be obtained directly at the event for 30 euro fee includes the event and a wineglass/holder.
